Tom's Story

When I first came to the New Foundation Center, everything was off: I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t talk to people, I couldn’t go to the store. From an early age, I had had mental problems culminating in five hospitalizations, the last one five years ago. The doctors suggested a nursing home; my wife disagreed. She had heard about the Center.

“The first step in recovery is spiritual: you have to do what you think is right and eliminate bad behavior. The New Foundation Center is a great place to hang out and not get in trouble. Then, you have to square things with others. Taking care of other people is a big part of recovery.

“So is maturity, because you replace youthful energy with wisdom. Now, I’d take the wisdom any day of the week. Finally, at the Center, I’ve made great friends.

“Lately, I’ve been reminiscing about being in my grandparents’ house at Christmas; some of the best memories of my life were lost to me for years. Depressed people can’t say, ‘I was really happy then’ — but now I have a sense of where I came from and where I am today; the two are comparable. I feel so fortunate.”
