Local agency renamed
New Foundation Center
New Foundation Center is the new name of the agency formerly known as WilPower.
The not-for-profit organization, at 444 W. Frontage Road, Northfield, provides psychiatric rehabilitation, supportive housing, and employment services for people recovering from chronic mental illnesses.
More than 20 years ago, a handful of parents of people with mental illness opened a clubhouse where their adult children could get support in managing their illnesses. The organization was called WilPower, a name meant to capture the value of a “powerful” idea in Wilmette.
Since then, WilPower has grown and changed. It is now an organization serving 256 members, helping them live, work and recover. Among the families served, the mission is well-known, but in the larger community the name WilPower is often misunderstood. That is why the board decided on a new one - New Foundation Center.
The center recently unveiled a comprehensive Web site, www.newfoundationcenter.org, with information about services, resources and mental illness.
New Foundation Center is supported by government funds, user fees and contributions from the community. In addition to day programs at the Northfield clubhouse it operates permanent housing for 49 members in Evanston, Glencoe, Morton Grove, Northbrook, Northfield, Skokie and Wilmette.
